INHERITANCE is a first person horror video game where the player inherits a family home from her dead mother and navigates through her family’s trauma through three different generations, including her own.
Yuu is a young woman whose mother has just died. She’s inherited her mother’s family home and as the only child, Yuu’s responsibility to figure out what to do with it. As she cleans the house she realizes the family shrine is missing it’s portraits and has to find them and bring them to home to their shrine.
Her journey takes her to a specific relative’s memory and she must relive the events that take place as her ancestors to find where the portrait may have attached to. Each portrait is hidden in a place of strong or sentimental memories, such as an untouched bed where her aunt died which Yuu’s mother was tasked with cleaning.
As she journeys through the memories, she is able to determine a clear throughline wherein trauma is inherited within her family due to the consequences of political unrest and injustice, with herself being the latest victim.
In the end all the portraits are gathered on the shrine, the house is normal, and the game asks Yuu if she wants to stay here or leave and sell the house; the representation of her family's compounded traumatic history and what she chooses to do with it. There is no wrong or right answer and the game ends open ended.
